Cox Field opened in August of 1943 and was used by the United States Army Air Forces as a training base. At the end of the war the airfield was determined to be excess by the military and turned over to the City of Paris for civil use.
Cox Field is located approximately five miles east of the central district of Paris, Texas. The airport is situated on a 1600-acre site adjacent to U.S. Highway 271 and at an elevation of 547 feet above sea level.
